A cancer survivor wins a big jackpot worth of $1 million in Frederick

A Frederick cancer survivor and her husband, who won a $1 million Maryland Lottery scratch-off prize, said playing the lottery during treatment helped take their minds off their worries.

The couple claimed their prize Tuesday, but they were already celebrating something even bigger.

Upon claiming the prize, the husband said: "She just survived cancer, so it's a blessing."

During her treatment, and in recent weeks and months, the pair played scratch-offs as a distraction.

The $20 Show Me $1,000,000! scratch-off delivered a $1 million top-prize win. The couple said the extra money will make it possible for the wife to retire early and settle a few bills.

Most of the rest will end up in savings. "We'll be able to get her off her feet," said the 57-year-old husband.
