Unclaimed $1 Million Powerball Prize in Kentucky to Support Education Fund

No one claimed a $1M Powerball win in Kentucky. What the lottery did with the money

An unclaimed $1 million Powerball prize in Kentucky from a ticket sold in 2023 will now contribute to the state's education fund.

The rare event was brought to attention earlier this month when the Kentucky Lottery disclosed that the winning ticket, sold in Henry County, had gone unclaimed since the drawing on July 19, 2023. Despite the significant sum, no one stepped forward to collect the prize, prompting the decision to redirect the funds to support education.

Kentucky Lottery spokesperson Terry Sebastian highlighted the rarity of such occurrences, mentioning that they did not find an unclaimed win of this magnitude since at least mid-2018.

The unclaimed jackpot contrasts with the excitement surrounding the Powerball drawing in July 2023 when the jackpot reached an impressive $1 billion, eventually won by a player in Los Angeles. The unclaimed prize serves as a reminder of the importance of promptly checking and claiming lottery winnings to avoid missing out on significant sums.
