The first drawing of the Mega Millions lottery happened on May 17, 2002, and initially, the name of the lottery was The Big Game Mega Millions. Until February 2003, It was called "The Big Game Mega Millions" but after that, "The Big Game" was removed from the name, and the Mega Millions trademark is now owned by the Illinois Lottery.
California joined Mega Millions on June 24, 2005, and the drawing for that night happened in Hollywood. On November 15, 2005, the lottery announced its first Jackpot winner, and the Jackpot winning ticket for that draw was sold in California.
The Megaplier was made available to all the Mega Millions lottery drawings in January 2011.
Florida joined Mega Millions on May 15, 2013; the first drawing in which people of Florida bought tickets for the lottery was held on May 17, 2013.
Till October 18, 2013; the Mega Millions drawing format was 5/56 + 1/46. After that, It is revised to 5/75 + 1/15 format, and the first drawing that occurred with this new format was on October 22, 2013.
On October 23, 2018, the Mega Millions Lottery drawing produced the largest jackpot of $1.537 billion. The ticket was purchased in South Carolina and the person who bought the ticket remains anonymous.
Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Mega Millions starting jackpot amount was reset to $20 million and the rollover to $2 million for the drawing that has no jackpot winner.
