History of Powerball in New Zealand
In February 1986, the Cabinet of New Zealand authorized the establishment of Lotto, and the appropriate legislation was passed by Parliament in April of that year by a vote of 47 to 20. During the establishment of the New Zealand Lotteries Commission in June 1987, the existing Golden Kiwi lottery was transferred to its jurisdiction. Lotto New Zealand has been the commission's commercial name since 2013.
On August 1, 1987, the inaugural Lotto draw was performed, with a $359,808 jackpot. With the introduction of a number of new games, as well as several that were subsequently canceled. Instant Kiwi scratchcards were launched in 1989 (replacing Golden Kiwi), Lotto Strike in 1993, Keno in 1994, Powerball in 2001, Big Wednesday in 2005, Bullseye in 2009, Play 3 in 2014, and Instant Play in 2017. In 2015, Big Wednesday ended, and Play 3 was launched in 2019.
"TeleBingo" and "Risk" have both used the lottery as a theme in the past. In 1998, there were a few "Extra Draws."
Lotto's commercial in April 2013 featured a dog swiping his owner's Lotto ticket because he had just been given a cat. The Advertising Standards Authority investigated the complaint in April 2013. The court threw out the case.
Powerball was Initiated in the month of February in the year 2001. When a Powerball number is purchased, a line might be "improved". Each ticket must include at least four Powerball numbers at a cost of $0.80 per line if Powerball is played. Unlike the regular Lotto draw, the Powerball number is generated by a different machine. It is possible to earn a portion of the Powerball prize pool if the winning Powerball number is on the same line as a winning Lotto ticket.
Powerball winners must also have won Lotto's first division before they may be eligible to play and win the Powerball. The minimum reward for the first division is $4 million, although the odds of winning are just one-tenth of those for the main draw. Powerball First Division has had a $50 million jackpot since April 2017. "Must Be Won" draws are conducted when the limit is reached or crossed, in which the First Division jackpot must be distributed between the winners of any division for whom there are winners if First Division is not won.
The Powerball number was first selected from eight numbers, and the minimum reward was $1 million. A steady increase in the maximum prize from $15 million to $30 million occurred. As of October 7, 2007, Powerball's minimum prize was increased to $3 million and the ten-number format was adopted. The minimum prize was increased to $4 million and the price per line was hiked from $0.50 to $0.60 on October 3, 2010. This was done to compensate the expense of the increase in GST from 12.5% to 15%. The maximum prize was raised from $30 million to $40 million in October 2015, when Division 7 was added. The price per line went hiked from $0.60 to $0.80 in April of that year.
How to Play Powerball
New Zealand Powerball drawings need just the entry of six digits (ranging from 1 to 40) plus an extra Powerball number on a single ticket (from 1 to 10). Alternatively, you may use our Quick Pick function to have your numbers chosen for you. A Powerball subscription is an option in addition to conventional one-time entries, multi-draw packages, and other entry types.
The lottery also pulls a bonus ball in addition to the six primary numbers and the extra Powerball number. In certain of Powerball's 13 secondary prize categories, players who match the bonus ball might win additional prizes. The extra ball in the New Zealand Powerball game sets it apart from other Powerball lotteries.

Every draw has a NZ$1 million top prize in Lotto First Division. NZ$4 million is the minimum Powerball jackpot. NZ$5 million is the combined first-division prize of the two games if your ticket matches the six main numbers drawn as well as the Powerball number. If the stated Powerball jackpot on Lottery's website is NZ$1 million more than Lotto NZ's official website, this explains why.
