Charlotte Woman Snags Lucky for Life Win, Chooses $280K Cash Payout

Against the odds of 1 in 1.8 million, a Charlotte woman struck it big with a $2 Lucky for Life ticket from the North Carolina Education Lottery.

Annette Harper matched all five white balls—14, 25, 33, 39, 40—securing the “$25,000 a year for life” prize. Had she also hit the gold ball, she’d be looking at a jaw-dropping $1,000 a day for life.

But here’s the twist: instead of the lifelong payout, Harper went for the one-time lump sum. After state and federal taxes, she walked away with $279,832 in cash. The winning ticket came from a Circle K on Central Avenue in Charlotte.

  • Prize options: $25,000 per year vs. $500,000 lump sum

  • Her choice: cash upfront

  • Take-home amount: nearly $280K

Lottery officials haven’t shared how Harper plans to spend her windfall, but one thing’s certain—she beat some incredible odds.
