James Lind, hailing from Fort Walton Beach, Florida, had a stroke of luck when he purchased a $30 scratch-off ticket in North Carolina and emerged as a $1 million winner.

The fortunate purchase was made at the Circle K located on Yadkin Road in Fayetteville. As Lind arrived at the state's lottery headquarters, he faced an important decision: whether to receive the prize as a $50,000 annuity over 20 years or opt for a lump sum amount. Ultimately, Lind chose the lump-sum payment, totaling $600,000.

After necessary state and federal tax withholdings, his final winnings amounted to $427,509.
