Flushing Couple Claims $1 Million Powerball Prize with Unique Split

Mengsi and Bin Chen of Flushing, Queens, have claimed a $1 million Powerball second prize, attracting attention for their unusual decision not to split the sum evenly.

Matching the first five Powerball numbers from the Aug. 28 drawing, they opted for a lump-sum payment of $612,240 after taxes. In a unique 80/20 split, Mengsi will receive $489,792, while Bin will get $122,448.

The winning ticket was sold at Skyview Newsstand on College Point Blvd. The odds of winning the second prize are 1 in 11,688,053.52.

Powerball, with draws on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Saturdays, contributes significantly to education in New York State, providing $3.7 billion in the fiscal year 2022-2023.
