$1.1 Million Lottery Ticket Found in Trash After Player Threw It Away
$1.1 Million Lottery Ticket Rescued From the Trash
Talk about a second chance.
A lottery player in southern Italy nearly lost a €1 million ($1.1 million+) prize after throwing away the winning ticket. The ticket was later recovered by waste workers before the garbage was taken to a landfill.
The player had checked the ticket at a shop in Bitonto, in Italy’s Apulia region, but was reportedly told it was “non-payable.” Thinking the ticket was worthless, they tossed it in the trash.
Then came the shocking discovery.
After getting home, a relative noticed that the player's regular numbers — 2, 4, 8, 10 and 51 — had all been drawn.
A Race Against the Garbage Truck
The player contacted local waste-collection company SANB, whose director Roberto Nicola Toscano called the situation “nothing short of miraculous.”
The “non-payable” message apparently appeared because the prize was too large for the retailer to pay directly.
Workers tracked down the garbage truck that had collected the trash before its load was compacted. The timing was another stroke of luck: because it was Sunday, the waste had not yet been sent to a landfill.
The garbage was taken to a special location, where workers spent two days searching through a mountain of trash.
Finally, they found it.
The winning ticket was discovered inside a damaged bag among other discarded tickets. Workers reportedly celebrated as though they had won the prize themselves.
The Workers Got Lucky, Too
The winner agreed to pay the cost of the search, while their identity remained private.
After helping recover the ticket, the waste workers decided to try their own luck and bought a scratch-off ticket as a joke.
They won €50.
A Reminder About Lottery Odds
The incredible story is fun, but lottery jackpots remain extremely difficult to win. For example, the odds of hitting the Powerball jackpot are about 1 in 292.2 million.
Americans spent roughly $104.7 billion on state lottery tickets in 2024, showing just how popular the dream of a huge payday remains.
But regularly spending money on lottery tickets can add up quickly. Spending just $10 a week equals $520 a year.
Instead of betting that money on a jackpot, putting it toward savings or retirement could give you a much more predictable path toward building wealth.
For example, investing $520 every year for 20 years at a 5% annual return could grow to more than $18,000.
The Italian player may have gotten an extraordinary second chance. For everyone else, building wealth usually comes down to something much less exciting — consistent saving, investing and patience.
