Canterbury lotto player shares $16m jackpot, raising over $11m for recovery efforts
A lucky lotto player from Canterbury has won a share of the $16 million jackpot, along with one other ticket holder who takes home $500,000.
In addition, 20 other players won $24,497 each with Second Division. However, the top prize in Strike was not won.
The special draw, which aimed to raise funds for recovery efforts in New Zealand after the recent natural disasters, was a huge success.
Lotto estimated it would raise $8 million, but the final amount raised was an "incredible" $11,770,000.
The Internal Affairs Minister Barbara Edmonds thanked all New Zealanders who contributed to the draw and the Cyclone Gabrielle Appeal Fund, which also raised over $830,000 for affected communities.
Lotto NZ chief executive Chris Lyman expressed his gratitude towards Lotto players throughout Aotearoa for their generosity. He said that Kiwis are renowned for being a generous bunch, but the support for this special draw has exceeded all expectations and will go a long way in helping those communities doing it tough right now.
