Man Won $5.8 Million Lottery Prize but Lost It Over a Missed Deadline

For most people, winning millions in the lottery is a dream. For Clarence Jackson, it turned into a heartbreaking missed opportunity.

In October 1995, the Connecticut man bought a Quick Pick lottery ticket while working as a cleaner and caring for his seriously ill father. One of the numbers matched the winning combination, making his ticket worth an incredible $5.8 million.

The problem? Clarence didn’t realize he had the winning ticket until almost a year later.

A heartbreaking deadline

The Connecticut Lottery gave winners 365 days to claim their prize. Clarence discovered his ticket was a winner on October 13, 1996—the final day of the claim period.

Unfortunately, that date fell on a Sunday.

Believing he had to take the ticket directly to lottery headquarters, Clarence assumed the office would be closed. He didn’t know he could have taken the ticket to the retailer where he purchased it.

The next day was Columbus Day, a state holiday, so Clarence finally submitted his ticket on October 15. By then, the deadline had already expired.

He took the lottery to court

Clarence sued the Connecticut Lottery Corporation, arguing that his difficult circumstances should have been taken into account. His father had been hospitalized with emphysema for much of the year, and Clarence spent most of that time caring for him.

“He was in the hospital for most of that year and he came home a week before the expiration date.”

Despite his argument, the court sided with the lottery. Officials maintained that the rules clearly required winners to claim their prizes within one calendar year.

Clarence ultimately walked away without the $5.8 million fortune.

Years later, he found a surprising way to look at the painful experience. Speaking about it in 2016, he suggested that receiving such a huge amount of money at a young age might not have worked out for him anyway.

A costly reminder: winning the lottery is only the first step—you also have to check your ticket and claim the prize before the deadline.
