Mega Millions Jackpot Climbs to $423 Million After No Winner

The Mega Millions jackpot just keeps climbing—now sitting at a jaw-dropping $423 million for the Friday, Sept. 19 drawing. Nobody hit the big one on Tuesday, Sept. 16, which means the prize rolled over and got even sweeter. Whoever matches all six winning numbers next will walk away with the option of a $196.5 million lump sum—life-changing money in an instant.
This year alone has been packed with Mega Millions action. The biggest jackpot so far came on June 27, when a lucky player in Virginia scored $348 million. Ohio also had a massive win on April 18 worth $112 million, while Illinois cashed in on a $344 million prize back in March. Add to that a $113 million win in January, and it’s been a lucky year for several states.
For the most recent draw on Friday, Sept. 19, the numbers were 2, 22, 27, 42, 58, with a Mega Ball of 8. Unfortunately, no one snagged the jackpot this round. Still, there were eight players who matched four numbers plus the Mega Ball, which means some solid payouts.
How Mega Millions Works
-
Tickets are easy to grab at gas stations, convenience stores, grocery stores, or even online in certain states.
-
Pick six numbers: five white balls (1–70) and one gold Mega Ball (1–24).
-
Don’t feel like picking? Just go with a Quick Pick or Easy Pick for random numbers.
-
Every ticket includes a built-in multiplier—2X, 3X, 4X, 5X, or even 10X—that boosts non-jackpot prizes.
Drawing Details
Mega Millions drawings happen twice a week, every Tuesday and Friday night at 11 p.m. ET. Millions of players tune in, hoping to see their numbers light up.
Odds of Winning
Winning the jackpot isn’t easy, but smaller prizes are within reach:
-
Jackpot (5 white balls + Mega Ball): 1 in 290,472,336
-
$1 million (5 white balls): 1 in 12,629,232
-
$10,000 (4 white balls + Mega Ball): 1 in 893,761
-
Even $5 for just the Mega Ball comes in at 1 in 35 odds.
So while the odds are long, the thrill of winning something keeps players coming back.
Where You Can Play
Mega Millions tickets are sold in 45 states, plus Washington, D.C., and the U.S. Virgin Islands. The only states that don’t sell tickets are Nevada, Utah, Alabama, Alaska, and Hawaii. And remember—if you buy a ticket out of state, you’ll need to claim your prize there.
Record-Breaking Jackpots
This isn’t the first time Mega Millions has made headlines with enormous jackpots:
-
$1.602 billion – Florida, Aug. 8, 2023 (the largest ever).
-
$1.537 billion – South Carolina, Oct. 23, 2018.
-
$1.348 billion – Maine, Jan. 13, 2023.
-
$1.337 billion – Illinois, July 29, 2022.
And the list goes on with multiple billion-dollar-plus wins across different states in recent years.
With another massive drawing around the corner, the question is—who will be the next to join the millionaire (or billionaire) club?
