Retired police officer was in shock after discovering $50,000 Powerball win

A Maryland Lottery player couldn't believe his luck after winning $50,000 Powerball prize.

John Boyd, a retired police officer from Towson wins the third-tier Powerball prize worth $50,000. He used to spend $20 on Powerball ticket whenever the jackpot rolled over to $100 million mark. Now, the occasional lottery player is celebrating his fortune. 

John Boyd, 64 purchased his winning ticket at the Maria's, which is his regular Maryland lottery retailer, located at 1812 Taylor Avenue in Parksville. The lucky winner purchased the ticket on April 1 and didn't realize that he had won big because he was out for a vacation when the drawing took place.

"I thought it was a mistake," John told lottery officials. He immediately shared the good news with his family members, who were also very excited. 

He didn't have any immediate plans for his windfall.
