'I just got lazy,' $50,000 Powerball winner cashes in ticket 9 days before it expires

In Hudson, Massachusetts, luck was on Danny Thomas's side as he claimed a $50,000 Powerball prize just moments before it expired. Thomas, known for his habit of buying lottery tickets without checking them, found out about unclaimed prizes through a radio broadcast. Prompted by the reminder, he and his wife Eva decided to dig through a towering stack of old lottery tickets and cross-check the numbers on the state lottery website.

To their astonishment, the Powerball ticket purchased on June 22, 2022, turned out to be a $50,000 winner. With only nine days left before the expiration date, they wasted no time in cashing it in. After taxes, the couple took home $35,000, and they have exciting plans to use their winnings towards buying a new car.

Reflecting on his stroke of luck, Thomas expressed his newfound determination to stay on top of checking his tickets in the future, remarking that winning something substantial feels great. Interestingly, this is not his first lottery triumph, as he had previously won $20,000 in 2004.

As the Massachusetts State Lottery issues reminders about expiring prizes, there are still two unclaimed $100,000 Mass Cash prizes, with one set to expire next week and the other the following month.
